To be completely honest, I had never even considered mentoring before being introduced to Beyond Mentoring SA. I always assumed support meant someone helping with day to day tasks, but I quickly realised mentoring is so much more than that. From the very beginning, my son's mentor focused on building a genuine relationship and understanding who he was as a person, not just his support needs.
Over time, we've seen incredible growth in his confidence, communication and willingness to step outside of his comfort zone. Rather than doing things for him, his mentor empowers him to build skills, make decisions and believe in his own abilities. He genuinely looks forward to every session and talks about his goals with excitement.
When my daughter first started receiving support through Beyond Mentoring SA, we were simply hoping to find someone who would be patient, understanding and a good fit for her.

My adult son has always struggled to make friends and put himself out there, so I was hoping mentoring would help him become a bit more socially connected.
What surprised me most was how naturally it happened.
His mentor never forced conversations or pushed him into situations he wasn't comfortable with. They simply met him where he was at, built trust and helped him gain confidence over time. He's now getting out of the house more, engaging with people and trying things he would have previously avoided.
For the first time in a long time, I feel like he's genuinely enjoying life instead of just getting through it.
“Beyond Mentoring SA has become a massive part of my support system, helping minimise my Brain injuries impact on my life. They show flexibility during supports, and an ability to adapt when my needs change, demonstrating an understanding on how my brain injury impacts me. They mentor me during supports like, fitness/staying active (when I have capacity to), getting to my appointments on time, shopping, and companionship. They have taken me to places like the beach (for a walk), Hahndorf (strawberry picking), Rundle mall (shopping) and exploring through the Adelaide botanical gardens. Without the support of Beyond Mentoring SA, I would struggle to maintain my current volunteer work, healthy friendships, and would risk social isolation as I wrestle with symptoms like fatigue, mental health, and maintaining a positive outlook on living with a disability. They help me stay safe in the community, especially with my balance issues, and stand out as champions due to their genuine desire to achieve inclusion, and encourage independence.”

Before being associated with Ty David did not have any good male role models around his own age in his life but now with BMSA and their ongoing care and mentoring to David we have seen David develop into a caring young man. Since engaging with Beyond Mentoring SA, I have been getting outdoors and have expanded my comfort zone to try different activities. I have really enjoyed the companionship and getting out of the house. Beyond Mentoring SA has helped me with my confidence and conversation skills. They have also helped me with boring admin tasks that I don’t like to do and have trouble completing on my own.
